The Science

As readers of Climbing from the Fifth Station know, there is a vast body of scientific research that helps leaders, managers and team builders make sense of apparently chaotic human behavior. Listed here are some of the tools we use in both our consulting and in our seminars. We use these either singly or in combination to help you build teams that work!

The Meyer Briggs Type Indicator® is the most widely used personality inventory in the world.  The MBTI® instrument provides an accurate picture of a person’s personality type by determining their preferences on four dichotomies:

Extraversion–Introversion: describes where people prefer to focus their attention and derive personal energy—either from the external world of people and activity or through an introspective world of ideas and experiences

Sensing–Intuition: describes how people prefer to gather data—focused on what is actually evident through their five senses or on abstract relationships between things

Thinking–Feeling: describes how people prefer to make decisions—based on fact-based, logical analysis or guided by personal values and concern for the impact of a decision on others

Judging–Perceiving: describes how people prefer to deal with the external world—in a planned, orderly way, or in a flexible, spontaneous way

Combinations of these preferences result in 16 distinct personality types. Importantly, each of the sixteen types represents a normal, legitimate way of viewing the world. Awareness of your own and other's Type not only will facilitate communication, but will help make sense of what otherwise might have seemed to be chaotic behavior! Reversal Theory is one of the most exciting psychological theories to have emerged over the last forty years. The theory, developed by Dr. Michael Apter of Georgetown University, deals with motivation and examines how and why our behavior often reverses itself.  Once made aware of motivational states and reversal triggers, an individual can manage both their personal and professional lives more effectively. Only recently has a tool been developed that makes the theory practically accessible to everyone. We are pleased to be among the first in the United States to offer our clients the   Apter Motivational Style Profile (AMSP).

The Personal Strengths Publishing's Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI) is a natural fit with Climbing From the Fifth Station principles which emphasize building on personal and organizational strengths. Grounded in Relationship Awareness Theory, developed by Dr. Elias Porter, it focuses on an individual's interpersonal strengths and suggests how those strengths may be used to develop stronger relationships. The SDI is a well seasoned instrument for team building, personal growth and spiritual development.

The Leadership Spectrum Profile (LSP), developed by Dr. Mary Lippitt is a  tool  to help leaders focus on results. The tool uses business language and concepts, to draw attention to the assumptions that impact decisions and results. The tool helps leaders and manager understand an organization's lifecycle and to make decisions that match their place in the lifecycle. The instrument is easy to use and provides leaders with a unique, result-oriented perspective.

A theory, once grasped, appears self evident.

One of the tests of a theory is, that once grasped, it appears self evident.

Arthur Koestler
